Hockey Drills - Flow 001 Long Attack 1/2 Rink

Skill:    Support the concepts of Time and Space as it relates to "time of possession". Create options for a quality shot on goal while controlling time and space in a 2 - 4 man attack.

Purpose:    Create a "Read and React" flow (time) through all 3 zones utilizing the rink (space) to create an odd man rush on your opponent.

Directions:    Pucks are in the corner. Skaters form lines at the blue line (GREEN) and the same side corner (BLACK). Cones are placed strategically in the defensive zone for the give n go and offensive zone to create traffic. (BLUE) lines represent passes.

1) Give N Go - At the directions of the leader GREEN skates toward BLACK to support the puck. BLACK passes the puck around the defender/cone to GREEN and cuts to the middle. GREEN gives a Give N Go area pass to BLACK and rolls to the middle to provide support.

2) Create Numbers - Upon receiving the pass from GREEN, BLACK skates from the middle to wide giving GREEN time to catch up (creating numbers). Just over the defensive blue line and before the center line BLACK gives an area pass from wide back to the middle to GREEN who is entering the play. GREEN carries the puck over the center line and gives an area pass to BLACK just passed the offensive blue line careful not to lead to deep in the zone.

3) Create Wide Attack - BLACK picks up the puck wide just over the blue line and is heading toward the net but recognizes that the middle has too much traffic. Initially (just over the blue line) GREEN rolls wide behind BLACK to provide support in case there is a drop pass. BLACK skates wide toward and around the corner giving GREEN time to get to the slot. BLACK continues to skate wide along boards and below the goal line trying to read both the opponent's defense and his offensive support. As BLACK continues to skate below the goal line more options are created.

  1. Before BLACK skates behind the net he passes to GREEN in the slot. BLACK skates behind and around the net to provide offensive support.
  2. BLACK reads that there is too much traffic on the strong side of the net and continues to skate behind the net. GREEN reads BLACK skating behind the net and provides offensive support mirroring BLACK in front of the net waiting for a pass from BLACK as he comes from behind the net or trying to pull the defense from in front of the net.
  3. BLACK is pulling defensemen with him below the goal line towards the back of the net. BLACK cycles the puck to GREEN while keeping the defenseman with him. BLACK skates behind and around the net to provide offensive support. GREEN skates from the slot to the puck and continues wide through the corner heading back toward the blue line giving BLACK time to get around the net  and any other offensive help to set up. GREEN passes through the slot to BLACK coming from behind the net.
  4. GREEN passes to the point. Point passes to the High Slot defenseman or to BLACK in the low slot.

Upon completing the iteration Green skates to the end of the new corner BLACK line and BLACK skates to the end of the old center GREEN line.

Variations:    Add point and high slot support.
